Copyright Laws
The BYU Salt Lake Center expects its instructors and students to follow US copyright law when creating course content and completing class assignments. Although the fair use law allows many copyrighted items to be used in an instructional setting, there are times when permission must be obtained from the copyright holder before a resource may be used. Instructors may contact the BYU Copyright Licensing Office for help in obtaining copyright clearance and for any other copyright questions. All instructors and students are strongly encouraged to complete the copyright tutorial provided by the Copyright Licensing Office.
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a 1974 federal law that protects the privacy of student education records. It outlines the rights of students who attend a postsecondary school like Brigham Young University. This includes the right to inspect and review education records, to seek to have records amended, and to have some control over the disclosure of information from the records. Because of federal privacy laws, the BYU Salt Lake Center cannot give student information to a third party unless the student has authorized that person through Guest Access.
For more information about FERPA, please see BYU’s Records Privacy (FERPA) website.
Deadlines for submission of course materials are governed in part by the Higher Education Opportunity Act (HEOA), which was passed and signed into law on August 14, 2008. The law requires higher education institutions that receive Title IV federal funding to inform students about course material and costs within a reasonable time before the start of the semester. BYU has set deadlines so it can post the information in time to be HEOA compliant. Please submit course material information by the deadline or as soon as possible. All materials that contribute to student expenses must be submitted to the BYU Store, even if it will not be the reseller of the material. This includes textbooks, packets, CDs, DVDs, e-books, access codes, etc. For more information on HEOA, please visit the BYU Office of General Counsel website.

Faculty who would like to offer their exams in the Provo Testing Center in addition to the Salt Lake Testing Center will need to submit their exams before 9 a.m. two business days prior to the start of the exam. Faculty can deliver their exams by uploading them to testing.byu.edu through Test Setup or by emailing them to slc-testing@byu.edu. Please see the Testing Center page for hours of operation.
The BYU Salt Lake Center library is a branch of BYU’s Harold B. Lee Library (HBLL). We offer a computer lab complete with databases and resources available on and off campus. Students and faculty may check out materials at the HBLL or request that they be sent to the BYU Salt Lake Center through interlibrary loan.
Library Instruction
Library instruction is a required component of First-Year Writing and Advanced Writing classes at BYU. These classes include WRTG 150, ENGL 311–316, and MCOM 320. Instruction is designed to teach students how to use library tools to perform college level research. Course instructors should contact the librarian, Amy Bernards, to set a time for this instruction to take place. Subject-specific research instruction (e.g. for BIO 100 or SFL 351 assignments) is also offered.
Technology Assistance
Library and Computer Lab staff can assist faculty members with technology issues, such as problems with classroom computers and projectors and connecting to Wi-Fi. They are also available to teach faculty members how to use the technology found in the classroom and the library. Feel free to drop by at any time or set up an appointment at slc-library@byu.edu or 801-933-9421.
Technology Available
Laptop Computers and Adapters
Instructors can check out laptop computers from the library for use in class. The library has a variety of adapters and power cables for instructors who use their own laptops.
Document Cameras
Document cameras can be used to project images of papers and 3D objects on a screen. Portable document cameras are available for checkout in the library. Permanently mounted document cameras can be found in rooms 101 and 410.
I-Panel Display
The I-Panel is a second display that can be attached to a TEC podium in rooms 410 and 318. On this display, an instructor can draw and make other annotations. These notes can also be saved by the instructor for future reference or distribution to class members.
iClicker
The iClicker is a way for instructors to give in-class quizzes instantaneously. BYU has standardized the iClicker system so students can use the same unit for all classes at the university. Student units are available for purchase in the BYU Store. The library has two classroom sets for temporary in-class use. Students cannot check out iClickers from the library.
